Yahoo Overtune? Overture?

I believe that still many web marketers out there misapprehend the Yahoo Search Marketing Program.

You can take a search on the keywords “yahoo overtune”

http://www.google.com.my/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=7W3&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=yahoo+overtune&spell=1

And the keywords “yahoo overture”

http://www.google.com.my/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=rri&q=yahoo+overture&btnG=Search&meta=

Compare the search results, and you will find most online marketers seems take it as “overtune” instead of “overture”. You may found that most people found that it is “overtune” instead of “overture”.

But anyway, Yahoo had brought Overture, and merged the default Ad delivery algorithm with Yahoo technology. Yahoo re-brands the product as Yahoo! Search Marketing

In short,

  • Yahoo Advertisers Program == Yahoo! Search Marketing
  • Yahoo Publishers Program == YPN (Yahoo! Publisher Network)
  • Google Advertisers Program == Google AdWords
  • Google Publishers Program == Google AdSense

So, after this tuition class, hope you don’t get the wrong spelling any more  :)

Place Ads Effectively in Your Website/Blog

After review some websites as requested from N7V, DP, WM-Talk, I decided to start a topic related to Ads Placement Study. Thanks for inspirate me I have to say.

As you can see, Ads serve most of the websites and blogs. It provides meat and butter to webmaster to continue expand their pages, and turn their quality traffics into revenue. That’s why I should say, deliver Ads Message to your visitors is more like dealing with Arts. The smarter you present it to your audiences, the higher reputation and revenue you can earn.

Let’s start our topic today, I will bring you some real life examples, hope you enjoy it.

Applied Ads Placement inefficiently

Irrelevant Ads delivered

irrelevant_contextual_ads

Showing irrelevant Ads always result low CTR and low Conversion. There are two situations you can get wrong targeted result.

  1. adopt contextual ads in your website - I apologize that I still do not figure out the way to overcome it for huge advertiser like Yahoo, Google
  2. you picked the irrelevant ads to your page - You may need to monitor the Ads Performance by 3rd party tools in order to figure out the most effect banner to be chosen. I recommend you using OpenAds tweak on the CTR, Conversion on several campaigns to chose the one can generate highest revenue

Site Reputation Drop

Putting too many Ads in your page will create a “hard-sales” feeling to your audience and cause traffic lost on your website. You can’t earn more revenue but lost your traffic at the same time.

hard sales ads

hard sales ads

This is a real website grabbed from the same page (I have to apologize to the author before I continue giving my comment on the page). This webmaster wasting too many efforts by simply scatters the Ads around the page (3 contextual Ads and other affiliate links). It reduced the readers’ interest in reading the articles even its quality.

Wasting Media Space

wasting media space
Header of the website: attractive logo, but with the two portions of page remain BLANK

wasting media space
Footer of the same page: we only saw Ads and wasted media space but not content

Some webmaster just too hunger for Ads Revenue and putting all the Ads on a page without consider the layout of the page. Sometimes they don’t even realize that lots of spaces are wasted. For your information, Media Space on your page considers as every combination of your monitor’s pixel which can deliver your audience certain information, either your quality content, or Ads. As you know two important points,

  • the top media space is always valuable than the bottom
  • visitors love Content far more than Ads

So, you need to maximize your media space, to locate your Ads without bugging them to read your content. Furthermore leaving the portion of your page BLANK mean you are wasting your media space (unless you consider that as your page design)

Good Practices Ads Placing

Most Suitable Ads Spot For Article Type Website

most suitable ads spot for webpage

If you are running a content based website or blog, you can take the picture above as your reference. The top and the right corner is the best Ad Spot for you to install your Ads Code. Your readers can enjoy your articles without bugging by your fancy Ads. And if you want to get more credit from your Ads Revenue, you can add your Ads Code in between your articles paragraph. Those in between paragraph’s Ads will increase your Ads Awareness, which is candy for your Advertisers.

P.S. for those intend to use in-text Ads, you may need to reconsider it twice. According to online readers’ respond, most of them do not like in-text Ads

intext ads on article

It’s look like a normal link (with double underlines). When user mouse over it, Ads will pop up and block the readers from continue reading the content but Ads. Most of the online marketer admitted it bring more side effect than revenue to their site (including me). It change the web surfing behaviors (most online surfers seeks link for content, not Ads)

Ads Dessert

CandyStand

Personally, I like the games in CandyStand. They hosted the most quality flash games and all the games are free. I love the way they conduct their Ads to their audiences. They hosted the longest Ads (similar to TV commercial Ads), but always make the visitors willing to wait, and enjoy their Ads. This is because they believe that it’s worth-to-wait (even though they know it’s Ads) for the game they want to play behind the Ads. But in order to adopt this Ads delivery concept to your website, you need to host quality contents (most probably media rich trailers, games, and motion graphics), most probably not suitable for article based website.

Well, I hope you enjoy my article.

How to write Catchy Title?

I believe that most web marketers joins forum that relevant to their websites/blogs. The reasons they join

  • Snip in affiliate link to make referral income
  • Look for support for their site
  • Sharpen their online marketing skill
  • Increase backlink

That’s why create a Catchy Title is as important as create a Quality Content.

If you are a forum shopper, it’s not hard for you to find some thread title like

  • “Hi! Look Here!”
  • “Help!!!”
  • “Year End Offer”

It’s really doesn’t catch our attention but most of the time we just ignore it. I suspect most of the time they only entertain by Moderators

You must know that the thread represent our identity. The more quality thread you posted up, the more public awareness you generated. Like John Chow, Matt Cutt. You can become one of them. All you need is just a passion in creating quality posts and replies.

Try to make your Thread Title in the form of “Call-An-Action

Bad Practice Better Approach
“Hi! Look Here!” “Join my New Webmaster Forum! First 100 with Exclusive Freebies”
“Help!” “Stuck into Symfony ORM Layer, need support”
“Year End Offer” “2008 Year End Poker Affiliate Program, 50% commission”

Paying some patient in tricking your thread, it can become your soldiers to fight for public attentions. Squish in KEYWORDS to your title help Search Engine to index your threads. And can even get more targeted traffic to visit your post. Let them to advertise for you (if you embedded your website link in the thread body). If the topic related to your link, you can teach search spider, “Yeah, my ABC URL related to this thread”. Make the spider know you and your website more.

Thanks for your time!

3 ways to Drive Consistence Traffic to Your Website

Setting up a website isn’t that hard for ontrepreneurs (online-entrepreneurs) nowadays. You can either hire one or two programmers to do this dirty job for you; or just source from internet to get a free open source programs. These programs are ready for use in either commercial or non-commercial usage without any charges. Then subscribe an affordable web hosting service and install your program. Guess what? Say the magic words “boo-boo!” and your site is done.

But the nightmare is only begun. Most online marketers know how to setup website easily (because most program is just plug-and-play) but they couldn’t last long for their website (I used to be one of them). They couldn’t get more traffic to their website, couldn’t generate any lead and sales and end up, need to turn down their potential website. Actually, all we need is some patients and a proper cookbook to bake the traffic, don’t you agree with that? Take my words!

Do What You Like, Like What You Do!

This is the only way to provide you passions to continue harvest for traffic and make your site last long. Without further bullshit, I bring you to the meat and butter of this topic. Hope you enjoy it.

Join Relevant Forum

This is the very first step you need to do before you can get any traffic to your website. You won’t expect traffic to your website unless you approach the traffic sources, rite? Start your search engine and type the relevant keywords to the search bar. Let says if you running a fitness products related website, you can type “fitness product forum” as your keywords. You can find tons of relevant forum discussion about this topic. Sign up at least 10 of them (since most of them are free to participate). You will need to pay 120% attention on their voices. They are considered as your Potential Customers, so listen to their mind is one of the critical courses for you to increase their awareness on you.

Don’t forget to attach your signature in your member profile page. Edit your signature and put your greeting words which can uniquely separate you from other forum member. Trust me, it works! Beside some intro about yourself, you can snip in a link to your website. But be careful, some forums have certain rules like

  • you may not make your signature more than 3 lines
  • no affiliate link allow
  • no image allow

You may have to read the terms of use carefully before they suspend your account.

Reply their thread, helping them solve their problem and provide suggestion to them. Yup, it cost up your time, “Why not I concentrate in making my business, spending my time in selling my product instead of answer their silly questions?” you may ask such question, but think in another way, every time we answer their questions, you built up a Confidence between your website and the member, and every bottom of your post will be attached with your website links in your signature. So, people won’t hesitate to visit your website. This would be an effective way to market out your website instead of paying other high traffic website your bucks to promote your site.

Create the topic you are confidence in their traffic flooded forum. They will appreciate your talk if you help them. It works as much as replying their forum posts. For example, James sales different kind of flowers on his website, and he wouldn’t expect people to visit his website by just telling the public “Come to my Flower Shop”, “Cheapest Rose”. Trust me, you won’t get much return from your advertising campaigns, or I can just say, you wasting your time in doing this kind of promotion especially nowadays internet marketing becomes competitive.

So, what James did, is doing something even extra ordinary. Since we all know what certain flower have season. James decided to create different forum topics called “Why you pick Rose in Christmas Day?” around the Christmas season, “Which Flower Suit Your Mom Best?” while mothers day. Tell you what; James can get lots of click-through for the topic he created. And the forums members will start remember James just because to the quality information he provided in the rite time.

Blog

Besides leaving the footstep on the public forum, you can start your own blog. Blog about anything you are able to provide to public, the search engine will slowly spot your blog and bring you relevant traffic to your blog. Remember the equation below

Blogging == Advertise Yourself Effectively

Even though you can hard sell your products, your services, and I tell you what, you can lose certain of your visitors. For them, you just force them to read your product instead of “useful” information they can learn from you. Marketing yourself at the rite time, in the rite place of your blog.

Avoid using the following technique for your blog

  • Do not using Pop-Up Ads
    • Try not to run Pop-Up CPM Ads from your blog, it will kill your visitor from visiting your blog again.
  • Do not over promote your products, services instead of providing them what they wish to get from your blog
  • Do not use InText Ads
    • This ads will snip in your content and look like a hyperlink, your visitor will see your Ads while mouse over the hyperlink-like text. More and more of Online Marketer making noise after using this kind of technique to earn from Ads.
  • Do not stop your blog
    • Certain blogger who are full of passion start writing their blog for 1~2 a days. But after few weeks, they gave up because found their traffic report which only few visitors to their site each day. This is my advice, start your blog need a long run strategy, do not expect to boost up traffic even though you write 50 blogs a day and keep it for 1 week. The Best way to do it, is to post up your blog twice a week, schedule it like each Tuesday, Friday to upload new blog. So your visitors will learn from your blog, they know that each Tuesday and Friday they can come back to your blog again. This will help you to bring in consistence traffics, while you can use other days to sharpen your marketing skill, participate forums, meet your new friends.

Provide Freebies

Using the magic words **FREE** to catch the attention of your online audience. They wont hesitate to pay a visit of your site while they see the words **FREE**. Don’t pay your 100% in selling your product, service but to giving alternative for them. Giving them free services, consultation to help them grow and they will love you. Who knows they will come back and subscribe your service one day?

This is how the online marketers do

  1. Give out Freebies link to Freebies Website
  2. Before they see their download link for freebies, let them see the comparison chart between the FREE and PAID version
  3. Give out the FREE version download link
  4. Saying “Good Luck” to them

This is a simple yet advance mind tricks. People always look for Freebies, and a Better product. That’s why they will 100% look at the comparison chart if they interested in your FREE version.

Our terms of Freebies related to “Free Service”, “Free Tutorials”, “Free Software Download”, or “20% discounts on …” this is something cant reject from human mind (since selling product is no longer concentrate in product but marketing skill). You will find lots of commercial website providing this kind of Free and Paid Service. They playing the tricky mind game that letting the customer to “Chose” their own choice. By using the **FREE** service to keep their attention to read your **PAID** service. I can tell you; this sentence always will always come into their mind

“Should I Buy It?”, “Is the FREE Service Enough for Me?”

So, hitting your jackpot is just one step in front. Good Luck!

Above are my 3 humble points to help online marketer to market out their website. Hope it helps you all.

See you in the next session!
